Shopping Online for Guns in Texas: The 5-Step Process

If you're a Texas resident looking to buy a gun online, the thought of navigating this process can be intimidating. But with a little guidance and preparation, it doesn't have to be overwhelming. In fact, the actual steps are straightforward. Jim's Firearms has outlined the five-step purchasing process for online guns in Texas so that you can shop with confidence. Armed with this knowledge, first-time gun buyers and experienced collectors can complete their online transactions in no time!

Step 1: Start By Locating a Local FFL

An FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealer is licensed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). When purchasing a firearm online, federal law requires that all firearms transfers must be handled through a licensed dealer. This requirement helps ensure that the transfer of firearms is conducted legally. And, this confirms that the buyer is eligible to own a firearm under federal and state law.

Before searching for online guns in Texas, start by finding an FFL dealer near you.

Step 2: Confirm Your Transfer With Your FFL Contact

Before looking to buy online guns in Texas, ensure that you are eligible to own a firearm. Under local Texas and federal law, buyers must meet the following requirements:

  • To purchase a handgun, you must be at least 21 years old. To purchase a long gun, you must be at least 18 years old.
  • Texas law requires that you are a resident of the state for at least six months before purchasing a firearm.
  • You must not be prohibited by law from possessing firearms. For example, buyers must not have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence crime.
  • You must not be declared mentally incompetent by a court of law.
  • You must not be a user of controlled substances or suffer from substance abuse issues.

Your FFL dealer will perform a background check to ensure that you meet these requirements. If your background check is approved, you can move forward with confirming your transfer.

Step 3: Place Your Order Online

Find a trustworthy online retailer for quality firearms. At Jim's Firearms, we carry a wide range of handguns, rifles, and shotguns. You can also choose from accessories and extras including knives, clothing, silencers, sensors, and more. We are also proud to offer custom 1911 firearms, the perfect addition to any gun enthusiast's collection.

Are you a hunter, a collector, or a first-time buyer? Jim's Firearms offers an extensive inventory to cater to every type of enthusiast. We are dedicated to furthering a culture of safe and educated gun ownership. If you have questions about our inventory or what firearm is best for you, we are always happy to help inform your decision.

Step 4: Transfer to Your Local Dealer

Once you've made your selection from Jim's Firearms, you can fill out our transfer form and complete your order. This form is required for purchases and comes with a $60 transfer fee. We then ship your firearm directly to your licensed FFL dealer.

They may complete an inspection of the firearm once they receive your shipment. This can take up to two days. And, this requires that the firearm stays in possession of your FFL dealer, unfired, during this inspection period. Once this process is complete, they will let you know it's time to pick up your firearm.

Step 5: Pick Up Your Purchase

All that's left is to pick up your new firearm! Make sure to come ready with the following:

  • Proof of identity, such as a driver's license or passport.
  • Proof of residency proving you have been a Texas resident for over six months.
  • Payment for any taxes, fees, or shipping costs that you have left to pay.

After you've completed your order and pickup, make sure to keep a record of your purchase. This should include the seller's information, the date of the transaction, and the firearm's make, model, and serial number. And, make sure to store your firearm safely and securely, away from children and unauthorized individuals.
